Join Hannah Humphreys from Willow & Gorse for a willow basketry workshop, hosted within our studio at Belladrum Estate...

Hannah is an ecologist and basketmaker based near Tain who has been weaving willow for around 4 years since falling in love with the mindfulness and sustainability of the craft. During the workshop you will learn the basics of willow weaving and create your own small ‘berry basket’ - a traditional beginners’ basket with endless uses including foraging, garden harvests or storage.

You will start the day learning about willow as a material, its origin, preparation and uses. Hannah will then teach you how to create a circular base, which forms the beginning of many willow creations. Once you have completed your base and staked up your basket there will a break for a delicious lunch served up by Wild Gorse Kitchen, with opportunity to explore the shop, before returning in the afternoon to weave up the sides of your basket, put down a simple border and add a pegged handle. 

You will head home with your own basket and a new crafting skill to experiment with at home.

No prior weaving experience is necessary, this is a beginner-friendly session.

Please dress comfortably and bring an extra layer as we may have the opportunity to work outside in the courtyard if weather permits.
